Voters in Beach Park, Lemont, Prospect Heights, Winthrop Harbor and Zion will have the opportunity to prevent Home Rule from taking effect in their communities via referenda in November.

During the next six weeks, registered voters in these areas will receive educational materials in the mail explaining the potential consequences of Home Rule if approved.

When misused, Home Rule:

  • increases a community’s debt,
  • raises property taxes without voter approval,
  • adds regulations, red tape and fees to real estate transactions, and
  • adds inspections and fees.

Illinois’ general election is Nov. 6.
