Cook County officials are weighing how to best implement an ordinance which will spell out criteria that can be used to assess who they rent to.

The so-called Just Housing Ordinance was passed earlier this year and is undergoing a rule-making process. The ordinance takes effect Dec. 31, 2019.

The Just Housing Ordinance sets limitations on what property owners can ask regarding criminal backgrounds of those applying to rent property.

Said Illinois REALTOR® Dan Schermerhorn in the Chicago Sun-Times:  “Criminal record screening is an essential function which helps owners and operators mitigate risk and ensure the safety and security of the residents and communities they serve.”

The state association has made recommendations to those writing the rules.
