Auburn, Ill., officials are seeking permission from voters Nov. 8 to become a Home Rule community, a move they say would allow them to implement a penny-per-gallon gas tax that would go toward infrastructure projects.
Auburn has 4,300 people, and there are four gas stations in the city.
It was unclear how much money the gas tax would raise, according to an article in the State Journal-Register.
Home rule allows elected officials to avoid a ballot referendum and gives them broad tax powers. City officials there could simply ask residents to approve a tax hike, rather than ask for the power to become a home rule community.
